Employers' federation opposes longer maternity leave while proposing more incentives be provided for employers

Only days after the labour movement reportedly called for longer maternity leave to help boost Singapore's birth rate, the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) is cautioning against doing so, citing "operation disruptions and loss of productivity".

In a statement, the SNEF also responded to a suggestion by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) of having two days' mandatory paternity leave: Legislating more types of leave "creates an entitlement mentality which is an unhealthy work value", it said.

My Big Fat Belizean, Singaporean Bank Account

Earlier this month, I decided to see how hard it would be to set up my own offshore bank account. I figured it would be pretty difficult, because I’m not rich and don’t have a team of tax lawyers to oversee my money and because the E.U. and U.S. governments have been cracking down on tax havens by imposing stricter tax-sharing requirements. So I proceeded with some caution.

First, I Googled “company registration tax haven” and randomly picked three firms that set up accounts in offshore jurisdictions. Then I called each and explained that I was hoping to minimize my tax exposure and didn’t want anyone to know anything about my finances. Each company quickly noted that I should consult a lawyer to make sure that I wasn’t breaking the law. Then they calmly explained how to create an account that, it seemed to me, was unlikely to be discovered by the I.R.S. or any other authority.

Yale’s Singapore University Criticized For Free-Speech Restrictions

The Ivy League school guaranteed academic freedom at its new Singapore campus, but now administrators say not so fast. Alex Klein reports.

The first thing you notice on a trip to Singapore isn’t what the city-state’s critics might like you to see: the professor who can’t profess, the student who can’t protest, the waiter who can’t unionize, the bleached-white detention centers

It’s the food—delicious. You can eat anything in Singapore: curry zestier than Delhi’s, pork sweeter and sourer than Szechuan’s, and, in its Americana-themed steakhouses, a solid sirloin.

All About The City Harvest Case

About the case

For two years, from 2010, the Commissioner of Charities (COC) and the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) conducted a concurrent investigation and inquiry into suspected financial irregularities inside the City Harvest church.

On June 26, 2012, five of its leaders, including founder Kong Hee, were arrested over alleged misuse of church funds and alleged breaches under charity laws.

The COC revealed that financial irregularities of at least $23 million from the charity's funds have been discovered which it said were used with the purported intention to finance Ho Yeow Sun's secular music career to connect with people. 42-year-old pop singer Ho Yeow Sun, also known as Sun Ho, is Kong Hee's wife.
