Fire in the home

The issue of homes being converted to temples has come to the fore after a fire broke out in one such home-temple hybrid in Bukit Timah, killing two. These home-temples pose a fire hazard especially because it is common practice to leave candles burning overnight at the altars.

According to the Taoist Federation, there are “as many as 2,000 such temples around”, although how many of those are actually authorised by HDB or URA is yet unknown. What is known is that there are some home-temple operators who are not complying with any fire safety regulations because they are “complacent” or are simply unable to understand the fire safety regulations which are written in English. Nevertheless, the Taoist and Buddhist Federations have issued fire safety guidelines in the past.

In response to queries from ST, HDB said that the use of flats for “public worship” is strictly prohibited. Even private property owners require permission from URA if they want to convert their homes to places of worship – unless the conversion was done before the Planning Act was enacted in 1960. But these laws do not seem to directly address the problem of fire safety

Goodness gracious, great balls of fire

An image from SingTel of the scene of the fire and the engineers working to restore services - Oct 22, 2013

SingTel has got nothing on me. I caused the greatest fire hazard in history and nearly killed my father.

At a community fireworks display back in the 1980s, I threw what I believed to be a used, dead firework into a huge bonfire - only to discover quickly that it was an unused, very much alive, firework.

My father's backside made that discovery even faster. The firework shot out of the flames like, well, a firework, and raced for my father's groin.
