Singapore screw up Airshow from trying to profit from S$10 cab surcharge

Organisers for the Singapore Airshow screwed up the exhibition on it’s very first day yesterday (Feb 16) by making visitors queued over 2 hours to exit the venue just because they disallowed taxi booking and demand S$10 surcharge for every taxi picking up passengers. The organiser, Experia Events, claimed that the surcharge is needed to “manage traffic congestion” and this is the first time in 20 years they are implementing the surcharge.

Foreign visitors expressed their frustrations as tempers flared at the staffs of the organiser. Private transport and even bicycles are disallowed. The taxis which came to pick passengers were mostly premium taxis like Chrysler and Mercedes which charge more than twice the usual rate. Even the shuttle bus charges S$8 per trip to the Singapore Expo station.

The organiser has in response said that they will make arrangements with taxi companies to ensure a steady supply of cabs but they intend to continue profiting from the S$10 surcharge. The event will continue for the next 5 days.

The Singapore Airshow 2016 Is Ridiculously Expensive To Escape From

Trade visitors at the Singapore Airshow 2016 left with dampened spirits and a hole in their pockets on Tuesday (16 Feb) due to the poor organization. Because this happened during the first day of the Singapore Airshow.

The waiting time for a taxi at the Singapore Airshow stretched over two and a half hours, leaving many visitors of the Airshow furious under the sweltering heat.

Organiser Experia Events not only forbade taxi bookings, but also charged $8 for a shuttle bus ride each way, and a surcharge of $10 for taxi rides from the event. These $8 shuttle buses only brought passengers from the Changi Exhibition Centre to the Singapore Expo. Bicycles and personal mobility devices (PMDs) are also prohibited, all in the name of traffic congestion and the lack of parking space.

Singapore Airshow organiser denies charges of gross profiteering at the airshow

Responding to allegations of “gross profiteering at the airshow” the organiser, Experia Events, has clarified that they do not.

In a statement the organiser said, “Experia Events has been working closely with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and local taxi companies on transport arrangements for every edition of the Singapore Airshow. This includes collaborating with local taxi companies to conduct briefings and on-site orientation sessions for their drivers to inform them about the transport arrangements for Singapore Airshow 2016.”

Trade visitors to the exhibition can only access the venue via cabs of approved taxi-operators and will be subjected to a $10 surcharge. Alternatively, they may pay S$8 for a shuttle bus ride to Singapore Expo.
