Update 20 May 2016: Chee reflects on the Bukit Batok by-election

With a restful past week, I have had the opportunity to reflect on the eventful election at Bukit Batok. In the midst of the many developments during the campaign, a clear pattern emerged: While the SDP focused on running a positive and forward-looking campaign, for which we take much pride, our opponents came with a different game-plan.

The PAP’s strategy was clear: envenom the nine-day campaign with as much vitriol as possible with facts sent to the mortuary.

It started off with the Chinese-language nightly, Lianhe Wanbao, which published an interview it did with me. The headlines screamed: CHEE PROUD OF HIS ‘WILD AND COLOURFUL PAST’. The not-so-small problem was that I did not say any of those words.

Bukit Batok all set for by-election

Barricades and voting booths went up at nine polling stations in single-seat Bukit Batok yesterday, ahead of Polling Day today.

The buzz will start from 8am and, over 12 hrs, as many as 25,727 eligible voters will head to these stations, sited at 6 HDB void decks, a pavilion and 2 secondary school canteens, to cast their ballots.

Their choice in this by-election is between People's Action Party (PAP) branch chairman Murali Pillai, 48, and Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan, 53.

ELD reminder on advertising guidelines

The Elections Department (ELD) yesterday issued a reminder to the public not to post election advertising on any platform, online or offline, on Cooling--Off Day and Polling Day.

Bukit Batok residents head to the polls today, with yesterday designated as Cooling--Off Day.

However, “several articles” were posted online regarding the by--election, the ELD said.

MDA files police report against TMG for breaching Parliamentary Elections Act


The Media Development Authority (MDA), acting on behalf of the Returning Officer, filed a police report against online news site The Middle Ground (TMG) after it was deemed to have breached the Parliamentary Elections Act.

The report was filed at 12.40pm on Fri (May 6). At 9.30am, MDA issued a takedown notice for TMG's article titled "BB BE: 50 voters in Bukit Batok". TMG was ordered to remove the article from its website no later than 3.30pm.

The piece, published on May 5, had asked 50 Bukit Batok voters over the past week how they would vote.

MDA orders The Middle Ground to take down article on Bukit Batok by-election

The Media Development Authority has filed a police report against The Middle Ground after it was deemed to have breached the Parliamentary Elections Act. The report was filed at 12.40pm on Fri (May 6), reported ChannelNewsAsia.

Singapore's media regulator has ordered news website The Middle Ground to take down its article on how Bukit Batok residents would vote in the by-election tomorrow (May 7).

The Media Development Authority (MDA) told the website this morning that the publication of the article 'BB BE: 50 voters in Bukit Batok' was a "breach of the Parliamentary Elections Act", said a note on The Middle Ground's homepage.
