In 2008 Singapore had the honour of hosting the first night-time event in Formula One history. The inaugural Singapore Grand Prix proved a huge hit, staged on a new street circuit, with the city's famous skyline providing a truly spectacular backdrop.
The race was announced in May 2007 following the agreement of a five-year deal between Formula One Management CEO Bernie Ecclestone, Singapore entrepreneur Mr Ong Beng Seng, and the Singapore Tourism Board.It instantly established itself as one of the most dramatic and atmospheric races on the calendar. The timing of the event also means it can be broadcast at a convenient time for European television audiences as well as thrilling local fans.
Using public roads around the Marina Bay area, the circuit utilises powerful lighting systems to replicate daylight conditions and the most stringent safety protocols ensure driver and spectator safety.

F1 Singapore Grand Prix extended for another four years to 2021
The Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix will be here until 2021, after Singapore's contract for the sport's only night race will be extended for another 4 years.
Formula 1 confirmed the deal on Friday (Sep 15), which comes after positive discussions between Formula 1 & Singapore Grand Prix organisers this month.
The fate of the marquee event hung in the balance as organisers negotiated its extension beyond 2017, amid slumping attendances and complaints of businesses being disrupted.

Singapore Grand Prix faces threat from Thailand, China
For most, a 10th anniversary is an occasion fit for celebration but, for the 2017 Formula One (F1) Singapore Grand Prix, festivities for this milestone are muted amid a future shrouded in uncertainty.
The world’s first and only night street race is entering the final leg of its five-year contract inked in 2012, with officials keeping mum for months on the progress of negotiations, TODAY reported on Thursday. No one can be sure if an extension is forthcoming, it added.
Responding to TODAY’s queries last week, the organisers of the Singapore GP said they are still in talks with new F1 owners Liberty Media over contract extensions, and “they do not comment on ongoing commercial negotiations”.

Singapore GP attendance falls as economic slowdown hurts
The night race, won by Germany’s Nico Rosberg, saw an average of 73,000 spectators attend for each of the three days of the race weekend, promoter Singapore GP said.
The 2015 edition attracted about 87,000 spectators daily, while the inaugural race in 2008 welcomed over 100,000 spectators.
“The overall ticket take-up is 15 percent lower than the average attendance at the Circuit Park since the inaugural race,” Singapore GP said.
