When blessed with a kettle in a hotel room, most of us will use it to make a cup of tea or coffee to kickstart the day or add a touch of extra cosiness before climbing into bed at night. However, it turns out some people haven't quite grasped the concept of what a kettle is for - and instead, they're using it for something seriously revolting.

Be warned before you read on - this could put you off your next hotel cuppa! Because, it turns out, some people use the kettle to... boil their underwear. We're not joking.

Apparently some guests who have forgotten to pack extra pants have been using their hotel room kettles as a makeshift washing machine, in a bid to sterilise their underwear so they can re-use. Not only is this incredibly dangerous - the kettle could overheat or become faulty and catch fire - but it also doesn't actually work.

Well, now, that’s an unnerving question, especially for someone who likes to brew drinks in hotel kettles.

I think it’s highly unlikely that most people would do something like that. For one thing, why would you want to boil your underwear?

Wouldn’t it be a lot simpler (and also easier on the fabric, especially synthetics and elastic waistbands) just to wash it out in the sink?

The weird habit came to light earlier this week, when someone asked the question on Twitter after he was told it was “a thing” by a friend. Guy 'Yug' Blomberg tweeted: “Real question: does anyone I know clean their underwear in a kettle when travelling?”

It hardly seems possible, but that isn’t even the worst thing guests have done with kettles – there have also been reports of customers urinating inside them. Unsurprisingly, scientists are not impressed by reports of people cleaning their pants in kettles and warn it could even be deadly.

Dr Heather Hendrickson is a Senior Lecturer in Molecular Biosciences at the Institute of Natural and Mathematical Sciences at Massey University in Aukland told Gizmodo: “It is super super super super gross.”
