Cities of the world celebrate new year 2014!
Sydney was among the first major global cities to usher in the new year
A spectacular fireworks lit up up the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Famed for its annual light show, the Australian city said that this year’s extravaganza, entitled “Shine”, was its most expensive ever.
A few hours later it was China’s turn to celebrate. Colour and light filled the Shanghai skyline in a dazzling pyrotechnic show, followed by fireworks set off from barges in the water.
The Great Wall of China played host to a huge light and music show – in which drummers, dancers and singers all performed to welcome 2014.

Fireworks are crackling through the night skies across the globe as revelers celebrate the first moments of 2014.
Crowds gathered in public spaces in major cities across the Asia-Pacific region to ring in the new year with music, fireworks and revelry. As clocks marched toward midnight around the world, crowds massed in Moscow, Dubai, London, New York and other major cities ahead of their celebrations.
Dubai created what it called the world's largest fireworks show. About a million people are expected to gather in New York's Times Square to watch a giant ball drop at the stroke of midnight, the best known of the American New Year's Eve rituals.

With fireworks, dancing and late-night revelry, millions around the world welcomed 2014 on Tuesday, gathering for huge displays of jubilation and unity as the new year arrived.
Dubai, a Persian Gulf city known for glitz, glamour and over-the-top achievements like the world's tallest skyscraper, sought to break another record by creating the largest fireworks show.
In Ukraine, anti-government protesters hoped to set their own record for the most people to sing a national anthem at the same time.

New Year's, and the time I always resolve to lose more weight, is arriving. Will I once again choose a diet du jour, and try to follow it for a few months, only to slip back into my favorite high-calorie snacks and desserts? Or should I take a serious look at 2014 and make better choices?
Starting back in ancient times, new year's resolutions have long been made. Babylonians began that custom. Vows to the god Janus were common in Roman times (vows were made in January, a month named after that god), and making a peacock vow concluded Medieval knights' days of Christmas.
And today, making resolutions is very common. 41 percent of individuals make resolutions, and 56 percent of those who make such resolutions are so confident they will be successful that they initiate changes within one month. Tragically, only 46 percent actually do succeed in keeping their resolutions at 6 months, and only 19 percent at one year.
