4 must-haves when travelling to places with poor hygiene

More than half of the Singapore women we surveyed avoid travelling to places with poor hygiene. Here, we suggest four travel must-haves for germophobes

#1 IODINE PILLS
These chemical tablets help to purify water by killing bacteria like giardia, which can cause diarrhoea and vomiting. They’re especially useful when you are out in the wilderness.

#2 HAND SANITISER
Using this helps to lower your risk of diarrhoea while on holiday, according to a study that was published in 2012 in the Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease journal, which surveyed 200 French travellers.

#3 SURGICAL MASK
Sneeze particles can travel up to 15m. That means a person who sneezes in an aircraft can spread his germs throughout the cabin, according to software company Ansys, which simulated the ways in which influenza particles travel in a pressurised plane cabin. Bottom line: If you’re travelling with someone who is sick, encourage her to put on a mask, pronto. Or wear one yourself.

#4 ALCOHOL WIPES
TV remotes are one of the dirtiest items in hotel rooms, according to a study on contamination levels led by the University of Houston in 2012. So before you start channel-surfing, go over the remote with an alcohol wipe.
