The National University of S'pore (NUS) has taken action against at least 14 undergraduates for their role in inappropriate orientation activities in July, The Straits Times has learnt.

It is understood that they were involved in organising or facilitating orientation camps, among them for the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences & the NUS Students' Union.

Inquiry into orientation activities still ongoing, says NUS

The disciplinary process launched by the National University of S'pore against students behind the controversial orientation activities for this year’s freshmen is still in progress & will be completed only next month, the NUS said on Thu (Sep 22).

In a strongly-worded statement, it also refuted an “incomplete and factually inaccurate” article by The Straits Times, which reported on its website that the university had taken action against at least 14 students for their roles in these activities.

In July, NUS suspended selected student-organised freshmen orientation activities following a The New Paper report on increasingly sexualised activities at its orientation camps. The university had said that those responsible would face its board of discipline.

The National University of S'pore (NUS) is rethinking its freshman orientation and reaching out to its students, alumni and faculty for ideas.

The review is being done by the Orientation Review Committee (ORC) set up by the Office of the Provost.

This follows The New Paper's expose in late July on sexualised activities that its freshmen were being put through. The activities included being forced to re-enact a rape scene between siblings, & one undergraduate being asked whose bodily fluids she would like to drink.

NUS orientation controversy heats up again – with ‘inaccurate’ ST report

CONTROVERSY over orientation games at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is back in the news – though, not for the reasons you might expect.

Remember in July when The New Paper ran that story about the hyper-sexualised games that some students complained about? That “rape simulation” that got people going “WTF”?

The university ended up apologising, suspending its Orientation Week, and putting in a whole bunch of measures to assure parents and the public that it won’t happen again.

NUS LAMBAST STRAITS TIMES FOR UNTRUTH REPORTING OF DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS

The National University of Singapore (NUS) would like to clarify incomplete and factually inaccurate information reported in The Straits Times article titled “Action taken against NUS students for role in inappropriate orientation activities”, which was published online on 22 September 2016.

When The Straits Times approached the University with the incomplete and inaccurate information the day before, NUS had indicated to the newspaper that there were a number of inaccuracies and gaps in the information The Straits Times had obtained.

The University had also explained in writing and over the telephone that NUS is unable to comment on the details of the disciplinary proceedings or the sanctions imposed as the disciplinary process is not yet complete. NUS had requested that the newspaper refrain from publishing incomplete and inaccurate information, and said that University would be in a better position to respond to media queries when the disciplinary process is complete in October 2016.

Straits Times report on disciplinary action over inappropriate orientation activities 'factually inaccurate': NUS

A report by the Straits Times on action taken against National University of S'pore (NUS) students for their role in inappropriate orientation activities is "factually inaccurate", NUS said in a statement on Thu (Sep 22).

The Straits Times had reported on Thursday that at least 14 NUS students have been disciplined in connection with the activities, & their punishments ranged from "warnings without record & mandatory community service".

"When The Straits Times approached the university with the incomplete & inaccurate information yesterday, NUS had indicated to the newspaper that there were a number of inaccuracies & gaps in the information The Straits Times had obtained," said NUS.

Sexualized Freshman Orientations at NUS

When National University of Singapore (NUS) freshman Rachel Lee turned up at an orientation camp in campus last month, she got a rude shock. During one of the games, she was made to do a forfeit where the "girls had to lie down and the guys had to do push-ups over them", she said.

Ms Lee, 19, declined to comply - she felt the act was lewd. Another game she observed required participants to pass M&M chocolates to one another using their mouths.

"I left after the first day with five or six like-minded friends," she said of the five-day camp organised by the NUS Students' Union.

The incident occurred during an unofficial orientation outing to Sentosa earlier this month when some seniors & freshmen took off their clothes in the sea while playing a game.

NUS told The New Paper that it is now investigating the students for inappropriate behaviour.
